Mt. Vernon, Illinois

This is the outfit I wore for out second day on the road back to California.  After we left Charleston, we entered Kentucky.  I have been to Kentucky years ago, but I did not remember much about it.  It's is funny to see that is looks just like the photos you see of it, lots of beautiful, rolling hills, and wooden fences.

After Kentucky, there was Indiana, and Illinois.  I was very surprised to see that Illinois was very rural, at least in the route we took.  There were miles and miles of nothing but trees and country.  We were getting tired and wanted to stop for the night, so we stayed at the first motel we saw advertised on the highway, which was the Royal Inn in Mt. Vernon.  The motel was nothing fancy, but decent, fairly clean, and a good price.  The area looked a little "questionable", so we decided to head just across the street to the Family Dollar for food we could eat in our room so we could avoid going out.  I had not walked 50 feet from the motel when a truck full of people drove by and someone yelled " woo hoo!"  Needles to say, that made me even more uncomfortable.  We stocked up on microwave food at the Family Dollar, and locked ourselves in our room.  I suppose our worries were for nothing, because no one really bothered us, after all.  We thought Mt. Vernon was tiny, and that the Royal Inn was the only lodging choice.  As we left early the next morning, we saw the city was actually pretty big, and there were many more hotel choices!  Pretty funny, actually.

So, if you're headed though that Mt. Vernon area, now you know there are many more choices than just the Royal Inn.  That being said, I think the Royal Inn is an okay choice.  The price was great!
