My "natural hair" wedding

Before the wedding
My husband, Vaughan, and I were married December 1st, 2009.
We decided to have the ceremony on our balcony of our apartment in San Antonio, Texas.

My husband and I both consider ourselves nonconformists, and in keeping with that tradition, I wore a wedding dress that was vintage and cost less than ten dollars, and wore my hair natural and curly, like I would have any other day.

It was never even a consideration to have my hair professionally done, or straightened, so I wouldn't look like my normal self, the way I looked when my husband and I first met, over a year before.

Photo from our first date
It seems to be a common thing for brides to have their hair "done" for their wedding day.
I have also heard stories of it not turning out like they expected.

I remember my own mother's story of how her family encouraged her to have her hair done at a salon for her wedding day, and how she regretted it.

I'm glad I made the choice to look like myself on such an important and special day.
Now when I look at those photos, I see me, not someone people think I should look like.
